Dave, girls and I always travel to Texas to see my amazing parents during Thanksgiving. It’s a week-long trip that takes a month to get ready for and a few days to recover from. We drive with 2-3 of our kids, leaving early in the morning and getting into town in time to bring them dinner.
The week after we get back, Dave and I look like zombies, we are tired and worn down from being hosts, referee’s and struggling with the lack of attention we haven’t been given or given to one another.
So we are hoping to start a new tradition: A mini vacation after our Thanksgiving trip, so this past year, we went to the beautiful Outlook Lodge in Green Mountain Falls, Co. Here is a little history on this historic location:
Situated northwest of Colorado Springs at an elevation of 7800 feet, Green Mountain Falls has been a resort destination since the late 1800’s. The village rests along the historic Ute Pass, while Pike’s Peak, the area’s most recognizable attraction, rises in the distance.
The town cherishes its history and has remained friendly and remarkably unchanged. The pace here will soon slow you down, and the fresh air will clear your mind. Numerous hiking trails with breathtaking views are right outside the Lodge’s door, as is the charming center of town. With a flourishing arts community and boundless natural wonder, this mountain retreat provides time to appreciate the untouched American West.
The Outlook Lodge itself, originally constructed in 1889, has been re-imagined as a private, contemporary escape providing all the necessary creature comforts while maintaining a rustic simplicity. The exterior woodwork and detailing have remained, preserving the timeless charm of its Victorian style. Set quietly amongst the trees, the Lodge offers a wrap-around porch outfitted with rocking chairs to while away the time, as well as a large outdoor fire pit, the perfect gathering place for an intimate evening outdoors.
Our first view of this Lodge was in the dark of the night, driving through snow and bundled up in boots, gloves, etc as we got to Green Mountain Falls. It was a cold November night, I worried about the chill in the air and if our rooms would be warm when we got there.
As you can see, this location was beautiful from the moment you walk in the front door. Fireplace, Christmas tree, a warm and cozy welcome, it was like walking into a loved one’s home. I immediately felt at ease. Then we opened the door to our room which was on the first floor, directly to the right of the front door as you get in.
We slept like babies in this beautiful house. Another couple showed up a few hours later and went upstairs to their private area. It has a room and then another room that has a set of bunk beds, each with their own TVs, that right there would have been the best thing in the world for my kids. If we had brought them, but that was the whole point of this, right? To get away, to reconnect, so, we left them at home, it was the only way!
The next day we explored Green Mountain Falls, went and ate at The Pantry. A local diner in town (which is a VERY easy walk, even in the snow) that serves amazing foods. Their Green Chili is to die for, if you don’t know, Colorado is known for their green chili, so if you are visiting, make sure you try as much of it as you can, it’s worth it. Then we found a lovely location for dinner later that night called Mucky Duck Restaurant, this is a place that I have requested to revisit for Valentine’s day. Yes, I want to drive to the mountains JUST for their food, again!
When we left on Sunday, it was a sad day for both of us. We didn’t want to pack up or put anything away into suitcases. We needed another day, another week and made the promise to revisit. I want to come with my parents, my kids, my friends, anyone that might need a sanctuary in a rocking chair, a couch or even cozied up to a fire listening to the winds blow through the mountains.
If you are looking for a quiet reprieve, a romantic trip for Valentines day or just a place to see your spouse again without distractions, visit The Outlook Lodge, and if you do, look me up, let me know what you think!
